About Chopstick Making Tokyo

Chopstick Making Tokyo is an independent guide to the city's hands-on chopstick workshops. We compare every studio we can find so you can book the right class without trawling through half a dozen listings. Ready to start? See all the workshops on the homepage.

Why we built this site

A chopstick-making class is one of the best-value cultural things you can do in Tokyo, but the listings are scattered across platforms and rarely tell you what actually separates one studio from another. We put the useful details in one place: price, neighbourhood, group size, what wood is included, and what the upgrades really cost.

We also explain what happens at the bench, because the right class depends on where you are staying, who you are travelling with, and how much time you have.

How we choose the workshops

We do not list everything. A studio earns a place here when it meets a consistent baseline:

  • A real, bookable workshop with English-speaking instructors
  • A verified track record of strong traveller reviews
  • Clear, honest inclusions, so you know what the base price covers before you book
  • Free cancellation, so you can plan without risk

How we make money

This site is free to use. When you book through a link here, we may earn a small commission from the booking platform at no extra cost to you. It never changes what you pay, and it never decides the order or rating of a workshop.

Our comparisons reflect verified reviews and genuine value, not commission rates.

About the author

This guide is written and maintained by Emma Whitfield, a Tokyo-based writer who has lived in the city since 2016. She first tried chopstick-making on a rainy afternoon in Asakusa and has since sat through classes in Shinjuku, Ginza and Shibuya to compare them properly. When she is not testing craft workshops she covers food and neighbourhood walks across the Kanto region.
